Methodology
Maps use identical color scales anchored to the combined min/max across both years for fair visual comparison. Numeric values are extracted from Factbook text using pattern-based parsers. Countries without data for a given year are excluded.
Pre-1992 Note: For 1990–1991, the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia are shown as single entities spanning their successor states’ territories. Indicator values represent the aggregate (e.g., total Soviet population), not individual republic data. The CIA published “NA” for many economic and military indicators for newly independent states in 1992–1993.
Military Data Note: Russia’s military expenditure is reported as NA in the CIA Factbook for 1990–2007. Values shown for 2008–2013 repeat a stale 2005 estimate (3.9% of GDP). Fresh data begins in 2014. Sources & Methodology →
